It’s on this historic path, about 35 kilometres from the golden city, that you’ll find a place where history breathes and a king's love story is etched into every brick: Pul Kanjri, also affectionately known as Pul Moran.
This isn't just a ruin or an old monument. To me, it feels like a page from a forgotten diary. It's a place that whispers tales of the legendary Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the 'Lion of Punjab,' and a beautiful dancer who captured his heart. It’s a story of love, but also of vision, unity, and resilience.
The Legend That Birthed a Bridge
Every historic place has a story, but the one behind Pul Kanjri feels like it’s straight out of a classic Punjabi folk tale. The heart of this legend is Moran, a graceful and talented dancer from a nearby village. She used to perform for Maharaja Ranjit Singh in Lahore, his grand capital. To reach the court, she had to cross the Hansli canal.
One day, as she was crossing, her beautiful silver sandal slipped from her foot and was swept away by the water. Upset by the loss and the difficult crossing, Moran refused to perform until a proper bridge was built. Moved by her distress, and perhaps his affection for her, the Maharaja didn't just console her; he ordered the construction of a beautiful bridge over the canal. And so, Pul Kanjri—the 'Bridge of the Courtesan'—was born. This simple act of love became a landmark that would serve generations of travellers, traders, and soldiers.

During the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971, this historic village was captured by Pakistani forces. However, it was later returned to India. To honour the brave soldiers of the Sikh Regiment who sacrificed their lives to recapture this land, a war memorial now stands tall within the complex. It serves as a poignant reminder that this monument of love is also a symbol of incredible courage and national pride.
Pul Kanjri Today: A Quiet Retreat into the Past
Thanks to the efforts of the Ministry of Tourism, Pul Kanjri has been beautifully restored. Walking through its arched gateways, past the serene Sarovar (bathing pool), and amidst the historic structures feels like a peaceful meditation. It’s a favorite spot for photographers, history buffs, and anyone looking to escape the noise and connect with Punjab's glorious past.
